The two major formats of an eBook are EPUB for Apple’s iOS (iPod, iPhone, iPad), Barnes & Noble (Nook), and other eBook readers, and Kindle (Mobipocket format) for the Amazon Kindle devices. The PDF is also considered an eBook format for an iOS or Android device, however it is has display limitations on digital devices.
There are many ways to create an eBook. Most designers may be turning to Adobe InDesign and Adobe’s Digital Publishing Software (DPS), and the release of Adobe CS6 has the necessary tools built in. According to Smashing Magazine, Apple Pages software has an EPUB export option ($20). Additionally, Calibre, a free download, can convert a file from a standard format such as Microsoft Word to the top eBook formats (EPUB and the Kindle’s Mobipocket format).
