The November 15, 2022 issue of Antique Trader magazine features the 55th edition of Kovels’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide 2023, and Kovels (http://www.kovels.com) business owner, Terry Kovel.
I took the photograph of Terry Kovel for the magazine cover and an inside picture of her holding a teapot.
Terry is my boss at Kovels and I have been very involved with the book for 12 years. I worked with dozens of auction houses to obtain the images for the price guide, as well as outlined and edited the images for the book directly for the publisher, Hachette in New York. The 2023 guide includes over 3150 images.
In addition to working on the images for the price guide, both print and online versions, I also designed ads for the back of the book, and work on marketing materials for the book for its promotion and release, including brochures, buck slip inserts, email blast graphics, and social media ads.

Peter Max exhibit announcement.
During our sunny, warm autumn in greater Cleveland, we were host to a renowned pop artist’s exhibit which warmed the soul! Peter Max had a retrospective of over 125 works of art at the Beachwood Community Center, in Beachwood, Ohio from October 16-25, 2015. Peter Max was available in person for the last two days of the show, to meet the public and to personally sign purchased artwork. I was able to attend the event, and converse with him. On two other occasions I also met him, once at his art exhibit in Little Italy, Cleveland, Ohio, and once at the Rock Hall. On one of those occasions I received a personalized autograph in exchange for a 1971 Peter Max Paper Airplane book that I had brought with me with intentions to have him sign. And, I recall an exhibit of his at Tower City one year that I attended with my late mother, which we both enjoyed.

Personalized autograph from Peter Max.
I am continually impressed with his work, the use of color, and the energy the work transmits. I love the use of broad multi-color brush strokes, and ever-changing subject matter and evolving style.
If his work comes to town again, I will surely go to see it, to be once again inspired.

Having been educated in the graphic arts and printing industry in my career as a graphic designer, when color giant Pantone® speaks, I listen!
Artists and designers, you may be interested to know that Pantone® has named the color of the year – Marsala. According to their web site it is described as “a naturally robust and earthy wine red.”
Additionally, the Pantone® Fashion Color Reports for Spring 2015 and Fall 2015 have been announced. These reports are released months in advance, the Spring report was released last September, and the Fall report was released this month (February). These reports are generated in conjunction with scheduled New York fashion shows that forecast clothing trends. I think it is very valuable as a designer to have this information to incorporate in creative visuals over the course of the year.
Color winners of the last five years are on the site, as well as other favorites.
Need inspiration? Browse around the Pantone® Canvas portfolio site. You can also sign-up and showcase your own work!

iPad drawing by Janet Dodrill.
Drawing is something I have always loved, and trained for in fine arts school. Then came the computer and I learned the creative electronic tools to make a living as a graphic designer. Along came the iPad and I avoided it primarily because of the expense, saving for two years to afford one. After the purchase, again, I avoided it. In my mind it was not enough like the computer and required learning to use it. I didn’t really know what to do with it or what it could be used for. A year and a half later, I now pick it up regularly to reconnect with my love for drawing. After installing some art Apps, I began using them. I hope to keep practicing and improving my (digital) drawing skills. I know now that both drawing and working with the iPad do take practice! The key for me, like working towards anything worthwhile in life, is to keep practicing.
I will be briefly sharing some of my work and the tools used for it at an upcoming presentation later this month:

A recent Google Doodle honoring the late graphic designer, Saul Bass, really started me looking at his body of work. An American graphic designer and filmmaker, he is best known for his motion picture title sequences, film posters and corporate logos. I googled his name and looked at the results in Images. In his work, I love the dramatic overall effect, and the use of solid color and cut-out shapes. With minimal elements, representational imagery and text, he tells a story. There is movement and energy in his work – many have a jarring effect.

Images results in Google with ‘Saul Bass’ keywords, but don’t be fooled as some of these results were designs created after Saul Bass in his style.
Since his death there have been graphics and movie posters seemingly designed with his influence. Articles have been written about it and included are Buried and Burn After Reading, Tron, Game of Thrones and others produced after his death in 1998.
Still, a great graphic designer influences a lot of other designers and causes many followers. Since I have always liked printmaking and utilizing an energy with the use of cut-out shapes and solid color primarily black in my work, his design style influences me as a graphic designer and I hope to research more of his work and that of other graphic design greats in the future.

Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, postcard
Recently, by going through family photos, albums and scrapbooks, these three old Cleveland postcards of Euclid Avenue, University Circle and the Hollenden building, were discovered, passed down through our family. I love old Cleveland pictures, and it is even interesting seeing the written correspondence and stamps on some of them.
People crave nostalgia, and Clevelander’s enjoy anything Cleveland! Progress in civilization changes things so quickly, which we can mostly tell by looking back.
I’ve noticed, working in the graphics industry, that back in the day of keylines, typesetting,

University Circle, Cleveland, Ohio, postcard
hand-lettering and illustration (for me it was 1970s through early 1990s), we strived to achieve a polished high end look that was difficult to manufacture by hand. Then when the desktop publishing-capable computers were introduced it seemed to be the answer to our hopes. We could generate clean text and grab clip art graphics. However, by the late 1990s fonts were being created with a hand-written or grunge look. Stock illustration was less sleek and more stroked and textured. We sought a more natural look from our computer layouts, and for the visuals to appear to be more authentic.

Hollenden Building, Cleveland Ohio, postcard
I have found a similar comparison with the direction of cameras and photography. Over time we have made many improvements to cameras and photographic imagery. From tin to plates to film to now digital cameras with ever-increasing megapixels and other features. How ironic that we get software and app filters to give us an old sepia tone or vintage look.
The innovative Instagram, available first, offered a multiple digital image filter app that could be applied from a phone or tablet and posted on the world wide web for millions to see and took off in popularity. And there are many more other apps that now do the same thing, most recently Twitter and Flickr.
Seeing old postcards is still special. That is when the imagery was the best it could be. It brings us back to a time when we had other priorities. You can just tell by these postcards that the fancy architecture shown would have drawn visitors to Cleveland, and that people were out catching cable cars, operating their horse-drawn carriages while going downtown to shop or work at their businesses, and other things of the day. It starts-off our imaginations when we look at them.
