Antique Trader Magazine features Terry Kovel and Kovels’ 2023 Price Guide

December 1, 2022

By Janet Dodrill

The November 15, 2022 issue of Antique Trader magazine features the 55th edition of Kovels’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide 2023, and Kovels (http://www.kovels.com) business owner, Terry Kovel.

I took the photograph of Terry Kovel for the magazine cover and an inside picture of her holding a teapot.

Terry is my boss at Kovels and I have been very involved with the book for 12 years. I worked with dozens of auction houses to obtain the images for the price guide, as well as outlined and edited the images for the book directly for the publisher, Hachette in New York. The 2023 guide includes over 3150 images.

In addition to working on the images for the price guide, both print and online versions, I also designed ads for the back of the book, and work on marketing materials for the book for its promotion and release, including brochures, buck slip inserts, email blast graphics, and social media ads.

The Effects of Waterlogue

October 22, 2014

By Janet Dodrill

Have you heard of the iPhone and iPad app called Waterlogue? The app converts your photos into beautiful watercolor-like images. It is published by Tinrocket, LLC and was co-created by John Balestrieri (Tinrocket, LLC) and Robert Clair (Chromatic Bytes, LLC). Available on iTunes for $2.99, it has a 4+ customer rating.

It is one of my favorite art apps to use. I create custom note cards using images that I first shoot on the iPad and then run them through Waterlogue.

Below are a few images (before and after) I created using various filters in the app.

Old Family Photos Repurposed

July 22, 2014

By Janet Dodrill

Do you have old family photos? For the past few years I have been scanning images and working on our ancestry lines and family trees. Discovering each relative and piecing together the large family puzzle has been fascinating and fulfilling.

My personal collection includes a large group of unidentified photos. I was considering taking these to a local antique shop to sell. Over time, I have seen a variety of creative uses for old family photos online. Here is a small selection of some of my favorite ideas I have seen.

The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes Series

June 23, 2014

Update, August 23, 2014: The digital art series mentioned in this blog post will be displayed at a future date at the Nature Center. The work on display there during ‘Raiders of the Lost Art’ exhibit includes my traditional oil paintings, acrylics, drawing and lino-cut prints, in addition to the work of Eugenia Vainberg and members of The Western Reserve Calligraphers Club.

A few months ago I brought some art work in for consignment at the gift shop, the Duck Pond, at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. Bringing only nature-themed work, the work includes note cards, lino-cut prints, art prints, mini oil paintings and wreaths.

Since then, I developed a new body of work. With an iPad, I photographed nature on the premises of the Nature Center, ran them through an art app, and created what I call ‘The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes Series.’ Some of these images are currently for sale in the gift shop on large note cards.

My contact there asked if I would participate in a group art exhibit in their gallery, for works that are nature-based, entitled ‘Raiders of the Lost Art’ running August 18 through November 7, 2014. Some of the images from this series will be enlarged to include in the show.

The Nature Center is located at 2600 South Park Boulevard, Shaker Heights, Ohio 44120, www.shakerlakes.org.

iPhone’s iOS6 Panorama Camera Feature

April 12, 2013

By Janet Dodrill

Have you experienced the panoramic photography option on iPhone 5’s using iOS6 (or iPhone 4S)? It can take up to a full 240-degree photo.

With little or no experience, one can create digital panoramic still pictures. With the iPhone 5, hold the camera vertically and access the camera app, press the camera shutter button and gently move the camera on a level horizontal path until you have captured the desired composition and then press the camera button again. The image will save to your camera roll. (Hold the camera horizontally and move the camera up to create a ‘vertorama’!)

These are panoramic images I created recently using the iPhone 5:

Have a Very Old Family Photograph? It Could Be Vernacular Photography

May 28, 2012

Image

Ambrotype

Have you heard of Vernacular Photography? According to Wikipediait refers to the creation of photographs by amateur or unknown photographers who take everyday life and common things as subjects.

silhouette

Silhouette

Stair Galleries, exhibited and auctioned The Gerald Kornblau Collection of Vernacular Photographyon March 10 & 11, 2012, which was 163 lots of everyday photography, images of which create interest, regardless of their common subject matter.  Prior to the auction, they were displayed in an exhibit in similar frames together on a wall.

Old Family Photograph

Apparently there is somewhat of a demand for very old photographs at auction houses and antique shops. Many will consign or buyout antique family photographs, silhouettes, and also daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. Garth’s in Ohio and Skinner in Massachusetts, both  auctioneers, and others including local antique shops, have carried these items.

Recently, our family has been going through family photos. We have discovered photos of relatives who are not identified. Perhaps we will consider selling some or decorating walls in our homes with them.
