Peter Max exhibit announcement.
During our sunny, warm autumn in greater Cleveland, we were host to a renowned pop artist’s exhibit which warmed the soul! Peter Max had a retrospective of over 125 works of art at the Beachwood Community Center, in Beachwood, Ohio from October 16-25, 2015. Peter Max was available in person for the last two days of the show, to meet the public and to personally sign purchased artwork. I was able to attend the event, and converse with him. On two other occasions I also met him, once at his art exhibit in Little Italy, Cleveland, Ohio, and once at the Rock Hall. On one of those occasions I received a personalized autograph in exchange for a 1971 Peter Max Paper Airplane book that I had brought with me with intentions to have him sign. And, I recall an exhibit of his at Tower City one year that I attended with my late mother, which we both enjoyed.

Personalized autograph from Peter Max.
I am continually impressed with his work, the use of color, and the energy the work transmits. I love the use of broad multi-color brush strokes, and ever-changing subject matter and evolving style.
If his work comes to town again, I will surely go to see it, to be once again inspired.

In The 216 gift shop.
In The 216 gift shop, which offers locally and Ohio made art and handmade products by local artisans and fine artists, opened in January 2015 and is located in Coventry Village. Store owner Jenny Goe began selling her jewelry at Coventry’s free outdoor summer concert series, and now manages the work of over 40 local artists who sell their wears in her shop. Everything is made in the state of Ohio.
Merchandise includes T-shirts, glass items and jewelry, ceramics, handmade soap, paintings and prints, pillows, and many other creative treasures.
This week I brought some of my note cards, prints and gift bags there for consignment. My original design themes include Cleveland skylines and landscapes, carousel horses of the Euclid Beach Carousel, and naturescapes from the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. Most of the images are iPad photo art, manipulated using art apps with photographs.

Recently, I picked up the iPad and started drawing, using primarily two art apps, ArtStudio ($4.99) by Lucky Clan (raster-based), and Inkpad (FREE) by Taptricks, Inc. (vector-based). I created together a series of images and presented them at a meeting about art apps titled A Quick Tour of Art Apps for iPad, at Cleveland Digital Publishing Users Group (CDPUG) on March 27, 2014.
Here are some of my iPad images.

George Rodrigue’s Blue Dog painting at Rodrigue Studio in Carmel, California.
On a recent trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, I found the art gallery Rodrigue Studio gallery, exclusively of the work of George Rodrigue.
Known primarily for his ‘Blue Dog’ paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolors; also drawings and mixed media) and limited edition prints (lithography, silkscreen, and serigraph), the George Rodrigue web site has a timeline, indicating that the first Blue Dog was painted in 1984, but prior to that the artist originally painted Cajun culture-themed works and Louisiana landscapes.

Rodrigue Studio, Carmel, CA.
Initially, he used a photograph of his own deceased dog as reference, and since then, sometimes incorporates figures and landscapes with the dogs into the work. Early blue dog paintings were not yet called Blue Dog until they became more popular in the early 1990s.

George Rodrigue’s Blue Dog mixed media artwork at Rodrigue Studio in Carmel, California.
Where else do you expect to see a painting of Clint Eastwood but in Carmel, California, at the Rodrigue Studio, in the city where he used to be mayor? Believed to be from his 2013 Hollywood Stars series, it is done in archival ink on metal, at 41 x 62 inches.
The gallery representative was friendly and outgoing, and allowed me to enjoy the whimsical work without pressure, making the experience fun and memorable – even allowing me to take photographs and offering to take one of me next to a painting.
Blue Dog books that have sold by the hundreds of thousands, calendars, and notecards are available on Amazon.com.

George Rodrigue Blue Dog painting.
What is the attraction to these paintings? They are unique and spark the imagination. Rodrigue painting reap high prices. Two sold recently at New Orleans Auction Galleries, Inc. – the 36″ x 48″ oil on canvas “My Yellow Oak” had a hammer price of $80,000, and the 14″ x 18″ acrylic on canvas “Blue Dog and Cypress” had a hammer price of $22,000, which doesn’t include the 23% buyer’s premium. Aside from inquiring about these works directly from Rodrigue Studio galleries (Carmel, CA, Lafayette, LA, and New Orleans, LA) and possibly at other art galleries, they are available on upcoming auctions at Liveauctioneers.com. Additionally, I found several of his paintings and prints for sale at Artbrokerage.com.
Next time I am in Layfatte, I would like to sit and eat Cajun cuisine at Blue Dog Café, which George has visited, surrounded by walls of a private collection of Blue Dog Art!

Ceramic Tiki Lamps
“Art in the Village” at Legacy Village, an arts festival in Lyndhurst, Ohio, brought gifted artisans and craftspersons this year. A few of my favorites included large colored metal garden art for walls or the ground, ceramic lamps with ceramic shades, hanging wind chimes using cut geodes and driftwood (The Stonecutter), large garden flowers out of vintage glassware, china cups, and plates with doorknob centers, incredible layered patterned wood boxes (Natural Renaissance), ceramic Tiki heads, and repurposed cell phones made into whimsical character sculptures (Paladin Workshop). I was ecstatic to find a freehand silhouette portrait artist doing this wonderful but dying art (Igor Nasibyan). If you haven’t been to an arts festival this summer, there may be still time to experience the unique work of many talented artists, possibly in your area.
